The Ulster Cancer Foundation has, since its establishment
thirty years ago, funded local cancer research activity, in
Northern Ireland. Expenditure within the charity, has traditionally
given equal support to cancer research and UCF Community Services
activities.
The UCF has spent approximately £10 million on cancer
research activities since we initiated the Department of Oncology
in 1974. In more recent years we contributed significant funds
to research in the University of Ulster and the Northern Ireland
Cancer Registry.
The UCF's policy to-day is to support and fund focused programmes
of cancer research activity in:
The Ulster
Cancer Foundation also sponsors the following:
- Annual
lecture to the Ulster Medical Society
- Annual
Lecture to the University of Ulster
- Annual
Michael Wood Lecture (N.Ireland Cancer Registry)
- Annual
N. Ireland Cancer Research Workshop (joint QUB & UofU)
Since
our funds are directed into well defined and clear priority
areas, no further applications for research grants are invited
from the cancer research community at large.
The Ulster Cancer Foundation believes it is imperative that
UCF funded research programmes are developed to the highest
international standards and to ensure this, outside peer review
should be carried out by those individuals directing the research.
The findings of reviews are presented to the UCF's Research
/ Clinical Services Advisory Panel annually.
The UCF supports collaborative development of cancer research
and encourages both international and local links with other
cancer research organisations, scientists, clinicians, etc.
